In coordination with the Prop Director, oversee and manage operations of Center Theatre Group’s prop department and stock, help coordinate and facilitate the property needs for all Center Theatre Group productions and artistic programming while ensuring that all prop needs are met with efficiency and accuracy.Primary Responsibilities

Collaborate with prop and design staff in conception, quality and timely production of properties for all productions, rehearsals and special projects within budgetary parameters. In coordination with the Prop Director, help establish budget parameters, estimate individual prop costs and overall prop expenditures to facilitate production management’s financial management of a show. Serve as a liaison for Center Theatre Group while working with the Prop Director and visiting designers in the evolution and execution of each production’s property needs. Attend production meetings, rehearsals, and techs as appropriate. Communicate prop notes to team (union and non-union), as required. Oversee all aspects of production support for rehearsal and performance periods. This entails remaining on site at the theatre for load in/out. Tech, and preview weeks, in rotation with other members of the production staff, ensuring that all the production needs are met 8:00am through 1:00am. Archive files for each production, noting source, price, and necessary specifics. Create prop lists and other documentations of assigned Center Theatre Group productions. Create and modify rehearsal and show props as needed. Perform and or supervise construction/craft tasks, which include: sewing, painting, carpentry, welding, upholstery, flame-proofing, digitally creating and manipulation of media for various prop applications, casting and molding, shopping and purchasing (internet and local), etc. Helping to maintain and repair props for the running of shows. Supervise in the estimating of materials and tools needed for specific projects and all the needs of prop builds including usage of hardware, metal, and wood stock. Perform and promote safe practices at all Center Theatre Group sites. Follow in-house safety procedures for theatrical weapons, and conform to state laws including hazardous waste and MSDS. Engage in other managerial and supervisory duties as may be assigned, and demonstrate a willingness to be flexible and responsive to changes in the scope of job responsibilities.

Secondary Responsibilities Facilitate prop rentals to outside groups, processing associated paperwork and income in a timely fashion. Manage the repair and outsourcing of prop stock, as needed, and ensure that the quality of the prop stock is maintained at acceptable levels. Supervise and maintain order, cleanliness and security of Center Theatre Group’s warehouse and prop stock. Help maintain a safe, healthy, and tidy work environment. Coordinate with the Prop Director to Oversee/coordinate shipping and receiving at the warehouse of prop and scenic elements for load ins/outs of Center Theatre Group productions. Reports all egregious safety violations to the Production Department Operations Director. Entrusted with petty cash and company credit cards. Responsible for tracking and coding expenditures in a timely fashion. Share in facility lock-up and security procedures. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Essential Skills

Ability to work independently, exercising judgment and discretion, while demonstrating initiative in the performance of all job duties and allow employees to work on their own and make decisions. Very strong organizational and time management skills. Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions (or present recommendations for the implementation of such solutions). Ability to multi-task and prioritize, work with a sense of urgency, and work under pressure. Must have skills and a working knowledge of theatrical props and furniture, and professional construction techniques and materials through formal and/or professional experience. Excellent carpentry skills are required, as well as knowledge of electrics, electronics, and welding. Experience in furniture building, crafts, molding and casting, painting, sewing, and upholstery. Ability to work in many media, including wood, metal, plastics, etc. Working knowledge of sewing machine, serger, table saw, radial arm saw, drill press, router, sanders and hand tools as well as appropriate safety techniques. Initiative and ability to work without hands-on supervision. Excellent Photoshop skills are required.

Minimum requirements: Essential functions and abilities

Theatrical background. Ability to multi-task and work with deadlines. Must have ability to plan projects and work independently. Lift up to 25lbs. Willingness and physical ability to work 40 hours or more per week on a flexible schedule. Ability to sit in workstation, type and work with a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to remain calm and productive in crisis situations demonstrating good people skills and a sense of humor.

Education, Experience, and Licensing

Undergraduate degree in theatre preferred. Applicant must be able to operate an Order Picker, Palette Jack, and Forklift (company requires/ provides certification). Computer operation with heavy usage of e-mail. Adobe Photoshop, Acrobat, FileMaker, Internet navigation, and Microsoft Office suite programs including Word and Excel. Company requires valid California driver’s license with good driving record. Must be 25 years of age or older to drive Center Theatre Group vehicles. Operation of company vehicles includes 16-foot stake-bed, pick up truck, and cargo van.
