The AOC is accepting applications for a Pipefitter to perform pipefitting and plumbing tasks; however, primary responsibility will be the installation and maintenance of landscape irrigation systems.The position may be filled at the WG-10 journey level, or at the WG-8 worker level where the incumbent performs progressively more responsible duties and responsibilities on a gradual basis to develop journey level skills in plumbing and pipefitting.This position is designated as “Emergency / Essential” and the incumbent will be required to work during emergency situations and inclement weather conditions.
The position is organizationally located in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Superintendent Capitol Grounds, Maintenance Division, Plumbing Branch. The position serves as a Pipefitter and performs journey level duties and responsibilities in plumbing and pipefitting throughout the Capitol Grounds, primarily with landscape irrigation systems. Performs both pipefitting and plumbing duties based upon availability to respond to job needs during their shift.The duties shown here are for the WG-10 journey level. At the WG-8, the position serves as a Pipefitting Worker and performs progressively more responsible duties and responsibilities on a gradual basis to develop journey level skills in plumbing and pipefitting.The position is considered essential and is required to report during emergency situations.Major Duties Include:Installing major 12 inch diameter, steel pipe for fire hydrant installation and repair within the perimeter of the Capitol Grounds. Installing backflow preventers/backflow check valves, involving major excavation and the cutting and welding of steel pipe typical of the Pipefitting occupation.Utilizing excavation equipment, including a Ditch-witch, Bobcat, Tractors, Sewer Machine for catch basins, as well as the K50 snake. Ensures that fire hydrants meet D.C. Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) and AOC service testing requirements annually.Installing, maintaining and repairing complex landscape irrigation systems including electronically controlled large output heads to drip irrigation tape. This includes programmable valves, timing and water control flow valves.Working with gardening teams to manage overall irrigation water use.Identifying and implementing system upgrades and modifications and managing the control system to provide the most efficient irrigation possible.Maintaining the historic exterior ornamental fountains throughout the Capitol campus. This process includes seasonal startups and shut downs as well as cleaning and maintenance through the season.Troubleshooting piping systems and related fixtures for water conservation efficiency. Repairs leaks in pipeline systems in accordance with specifications and codes. Repairs piping by welding, bolting, brazing, gluing, fusing, soldering and replacing with new couplings including Pro-Press.Assisting with snow removal operations.
