This position is located at the Wildlife Health Sciences (WHS), National Zoological Park (NZP), Smithsonian Institution (SI). The employee is responsible for managing all aspects of the veterinary health program at the NZP, located at Washington, D.C. The incumbent serves as Supervisory Veterinarian (Pathology) managing the pathology program at the National Zoological Park, including support for the campus at Washington DC.
Responsibility for the planning, coordination and direction of a full range of veterinary medical, administrative and management conditions and services for the pathology program at the NZP. Oversees and coordinates zoo necropsy services and pathological activities including gross necropsies and histopathologic examinations on all species of animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates) originating from the RCP and FR collections. Reviews histopathology findings and interpretation of pathology cases performed by veterinary preceptors, fellows, and residents. Formulates and conducts research on the mechanisms of disease to advance the knowledge of veterinary/animal health and curatorial decisions; develops and recommend new and revised research guidelines and proposed areas of study for research projects. Maintains and disposes of pathology records, digital records, slides, tissues, photographs and materials generated from the clinical or anatomical pathology laboratories. Organizes, assigns work and makes changes or adjustments in internal functions to accomplish mission objectives.
