Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Education and Public Programs, the Teaching Artist, Veterans Make Movies is responsible for co-teaching eight-week Veterans Make Movies filmmaking classes for veterans. The Teaching Artist, Veterans Make Movies will lead students in conceptualizing, writing, filming and editing short films that reflect their individual perspectives and, in turn, bring greater visibility to the veteran experience


Some duties include: plans and co-teaches Veterans Make Movies filmmaking classes at Exposition Park Library that take students from script to screen by instructing workshops in screenwriting, storyboarding, cinematography, sound design, and editing in iMovie; fosters a supportive and inspiring environment where students can explore personal stories, discuss works of art, collaborate, and share their ideas; evaluates the quality and effectiveness of the workshops as part of a formal impact study and make iterative changes; lifts 25 lbs or more and carries equipment to workshop location; performs other duties or special projects as assigned.


The qualified candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Film, Studio Art, Art Education and/or at least two years of teaching experience developing and implementing cohesive lesson plans. Experience in the following areas is required: teaching and building rapport with a diverse spectrum of communities and age ranges; teaching all stages of the filmmaking process (screenwriting, directing, cinematography, and editing) in informal learning or classroom settings; teaching a variety of filmmaking forms, such as narrative, documentary, video art, and essay films; and proficiency with digital cameras and iMovie editing software. The ideal candidate will have the ability to scaffold the art and film-making processes. Knowledge of and enthusiasm for how art and film can be used as tools to express the human condition, as well as, the capacity to facilitate group discussions by helping students make personal connections and identifying stories they want to share is essential to the role.
