The Role The After School STEM Educator will participate in the development and implementation of an out-of-school time program in two public school on behalf of Liberty Science Center. We will be hiring four educators–two educators to implement a Science of Board Games program that uses fun board games to teach scientific concepts (heavy emphasis on game theory) and two educators to implement a Science of Photography program that uses the art of photography to learn more about chemistry, biology, and design, etc.  The Educators will work with students in grades 4th through 8th at two local Jersey City schools. The After School STEM Program Educator will be expected to use their content expertise, passion for STEM, and best pedagogical practices to guide students through program experiences.  Program-specific training and learning assistance will be provided by Liberty Science Center. The LSC After School STEM Educator will report to the Director of STEM Innovation (Science of Board Games), or the Director of STEM Programs (Photography).   What You’ll Bring You are insightful, innovative, and creative. You can explain complicated science and technology concepts to young people with a variety of learning styles. You have an insatiable curiosity and knowledge about the ever-converging worlds of science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics, and culture.   What You’ll Do Participate in the development and design of high quality, hands-on, interactive out-of-school time STEM programs Deliver STEM-oriented programs to students in grades 4-8 at local schools in Jersey City Setup and breakdown of daily activities including ensuring the cleanliness of program space and that the program supplies are well organized and in good condition Meet weekly with supervisor and other staff members to share best practices and address challenges Maintain a weekly log of progress, including notes on adjustments made and suggested revisions Develop and maintain a positive learning environment Clarify the underlying scientific, technological, engineering or mathematics principles embedded in the lesson Field student questions and make necessary accommodations and modifications to support their engagement Promote problem solving using the design thinking process and engineering design process Other tasks as assigned   Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Ability to communicate technical concepts and ideas to others effectively, especially young people in grades 4-8 Affable and professional demeanor Responsible, reliable, and punctual Good critical thinking and problem solving skills Demonstrates knowledge and competence in photography, digital art and design, biology, and/or chemistry (Photography Program) Expert knowledge in gaming theory, engineering, physics, mathematics, and/or robotics (Science of Board Games) Ability to work under minimum supervision  Knowledge of NJ Student Learning Standards Exhibits patience and a positive attitude in establishing a good rapport with the students. Possesses good organizational skills and completes all responsibilities in a timely manner.   Preferred Qualifications & Experience Driver’s license or ability to take mass transit to school locations Experience delivering educational presentations in a fun, creative way 1+ years experience teaching students, specifically ages 8-14 years old   Schedule This is a part-time, non-exempt position equaling approximately 20-25 hours per week. During the school year from October through June 2020, the After School Educator must have late afternoon availability from 2:00 PM-7:00 PM, Monday through Friday. During the four-week long summer school session, the After School Educator must be available from 8:30 AM-1:30 PM, Monday through Friday.   Physical Demands The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
