The Role Liberty Science Center (LSC) is seeking an  Animal Keeper- Aquarist  to join our Animal Husbandry team. The Animal Keeper- Aquarist’s primary areas of focus will be:  (1) the care and maintenance of the aquatic animals, exhibits, and associate life support system and (2) assisting with the care of the remainder LSC animal collection. The Animal Keeper-Aquarist will report to the Animal Husbandry Director. What You’ll Bring You are detail-oriented, a team player, and a skilled observer who excels at both written and oral communication. You exercise sound judgment in emergency situations and respond with appropriate action.   What You’ll Do Provide and oversee care for the aquatic animal collection, totaling 20,000 gallons, with individual aquaria as large as 7,000 gallons Perform daily cleaning, feedings, and operation of life support systems  Provide ongoing care of the remainder of the living collection, including reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, birds, and mammals Maintain an intimate knowledge of animal health, exhibits, life support system operation, inventory, animal transport, quarantine procedures, species id and compatibility, and disease recognition Implement high-quality standards for exhibits to ensure clean, well-organized, and hazard-free work areas Perform lab work, such as regular water quality testing Input and maintain accurate records of daily observations and animal care data into databases Repair and maintain life support equipment, including pumps, UV sterilizers, protein skimmers, sand filters, plumbing, etc Train, supervise, and evaluate interns and volunteers Keep up-to-date awareness of cutting-edge animal husbandry techniques  Assist in the planning and operation of specimen collection trips Collaborate on brainstorming, developing and producing creative solutions that serve to strengthen LSC’s brand, mission, and revenue Other responsibilities, as needed   Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of large aquarium systems including life support systems, animal husbandry, maintenance needs, and quarantine protocols Previous experience with the maintenance and operation of large life support systems, including sand filters, canister filters, UV sterilizers, protein skimmers, and ozone generators is preferred. Knowledge of water chemistry, biological processes, and water quality analysis.   Preferred Qualifications & Experience Bachelor’s degree in biological or life sciences or equivalent training and experience. 1+ years of experience in an aquarium or zoological facility. Experience with plumbing.   Special Job-Related Requirements SCUBA certification Final offer contingent upon the successful outcome of a TB Test   Supervisory Responsibilities There is no supervisory responsibilities associated with this role.   Classification and Schedule  This is a full-time, non-exempt position. The regular schedule is Sunday-Thursday. The ideal candidate must be able to work a flexible work schedule that includes occasional early mornings, evenings, holidays, and emergency response.   Physical Demands  This position will require significant physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping, climbing, reaching above the head, repetitive motions, lifting heavy objects (up to 60 pounds), or standing for long periods. This position may require the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances. This position requires the ability to withstand exposure to high levels of noises and crowds. This position will involve work in wet or humid environments.
