Position Overview:

The Assistant Conductor works with the ASO’s Music Director, Principal Guest Conductor, and other guest conductors in rehearsals, in concerts and in recording sessions to ensure that the ASO performs at the highest possible artistic levels. The Assistant Conductor’s day-to-day duties are assigned by the ASO’s Chief Artistic Officer. The Assistant Conductor serves as the primary artistic support staff to the Music Director and assists them with the musical preparation of the orchestra at all rehearsals and concerts, while also preparing for the potential substitute for ailing or cancelled conductors. The Assistant Conductor helps prepare, program and host education and community engagement concerts that they regularly conduct, including Family Concerts, Concerts for Young People, Parks Concerts, Specials, etc. This person also conducts multiple popular and classical programs performed by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

The Music Director of the ASYO is the orchestra’s primary conductor and works collaboratively with the ASO’s Associate Director of Education and Community Engagement to establish and meet the ASYO’s goals, exercising, leadership in artistic matters, including repertoire selection, auditions, rehearsals, competitions, the selection and seating of players, and ensuring that the ASYO students receive a top-quality educations and artistic experience.

The appointment is for one year at a time. The Assistant Conductor and Music Director, ASYO is expected to reside in or near Atlanta, GA.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in music with a minimum of 3 years professional experience in arts administration with a symphony orchestra (or equivalent experience)
  • An extensive background and training in orchestral conducting; ability in developing, narrating, and conducting education and community programs
  • Knowledge of symphony orchestra structure and practice, symphonic repertoire and guest artists/conductors required. Familiarity with other types of music (i.e. jazz, pops, etc) and artists associated with these types of music is highly desirable
  • Must demonstrate the ability to successfully manage relationships with guest artists, staff conductor, ASO staff members, musicians and other constituents
  • Must be able to work days, evenings and weekends as required
  • Demonstrate ability to motivate others and to lead them to success
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and to handle calmly and efficiently situations ranging from routine to emergency

Essential Job Functions:

  • Attend all rehearsals and concerts conducted by the Music Director and other conductors as requested by the Music Director and Chief Artistic Officer. Prepare all scores to be able to replace a conductor as needed 
  • Conduct rehearsals and concerts as assigned when originally scheduled conductors of these services are not able to conduct
  • Assist the Chief Artistic Officer, Music Director, guest conductors, music library and artistic planning team as requested on artistic matters
  • Work with Associate Director of Education & Community Engagement and Chief Artistic Officer on ongoing education and community programs. Conduct rehearsals and concerts for all or most education and community concerts. Collaborate to prepare scripts and host education and community activities, events and concerts. Prepare school and community orchestras for side-by-side rehearsals and concerts with the ASO.
  • Exercise leadership in developing the overall artistic and educational quality of the ASYO in collaboration with the Associate Director of Education and Community Engagement
  • Work with ASO staff n the development of the popular and special programs as assigned
  • Assist in concert logistics such as media cues, supertitles, artist calls and other “theatre of a concert” elements for designated programs
  • Act as a spokesperson for ASO as requested. Raise the exposure of the ASO by attending community activities and fundraising events to demonstrate the Atlanta Symphony’s active participation in the community
