POSITION TITLE:      ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER (LIGHTING)

 

REPORTS TO:            Director of Operations

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

As a full-time member of the Artistic Operations Department and stage crew, the Assistant Stage Manager (Lighting) is responsible for performing routine duties in the support of all stage activities related to the placement and movement of equipment and instruments for the smooth and efficient operation of both SLSO and non-SLSO events in Powell Hall, as well as select services outside of Powell Hall, including parks concerts, runouts and tours.  In addition, the position serves as the primary lighting technician for SLSO and non-SLSO events in Powell Hall, as well as select services outside of Powell Hall.  As assigned in the Stage Manager’s absence, this position functions as the Stage Manager, leading stage crew activity and stage crew members, both full-time and extra stage hands.  This is a high-energy, fast-paced position requiring planning, organization, ability to manage work for multiple concurrent projects and attention to detail.  Teamwork is crucial to the success of this position. In addition, this position requires the ability to promote a positive and passionate work atmosphere by working with internal and external contacts in a professional and team-oriented manner. This position requires a variable work schedule, regularly including evenings and weekends.  

 

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  1. Organize, prepare and execute the placement and movement of equipment and instruments for orchestra rehearsals and concerts, as well as for hall rentals and non-orchestral events.Perform work for load-outs, load-ins and set-ups for services in Powell Hall, as well as tours, run-outs, and performances outside Hall.Execute setup of equipment and instruments in Front of House and support spaces as needed. Perform routine maintenance as needed.
  2. Operate and troubleshoot house lighting, video and sound systems.Instruct extra stage hands on how to operate these systems as needed.

     

  3. Act as Stage Manager as assigned. Lead stage crew, including Assistant Stage Manager (Sound) and 4th Stagehand if scheduled, as well as extra stage hands.Lead load-outs, load-ins and set-ups for services in Powell Hall, as well as tours, run-outs, and performances outside Hall. Proactively address and correct any issues that arise during crew work.Proactively report any issues to Director of Operations/Production Manager.Ensure individual and crew work is consistently correct and completed on time.Ensure stage crew is professional, productive and responsive during calls.

     

  4. Serve as primary lighting technician for SLSO and non-SLSO events in Powell Hall, as well as select services outside of Powell Hall. Consistently maintain house lighting systems and equipment and keep up-to-date maintenance records.Working closely with Director of Operations, suggest equipment, methods and/or modes of operation to improve lighting quality and reduce cost of operations, prepare project proposals including equipment needed and labor estimates, and assist with budget preparation for equipment, projects and maintenance as needed.

     

  5. In conjunction with Stage Manager, maintain official organized files for stage crew areas of stage productions, SLSO sponsored events, hall rentals and tours. Assist with maintenance and inventory of stage and touring equipment in conjunction with the Production and Hall Rental Manager.

     

  6. Read and respond to email. Maintain up-to-date calendar in Outlook. Attend scheduled meetings, preparing information and following up on actionable items as needed.
