The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking energetic, customer service-oriented individuals to join the Food Services Department as Baristas. This position is open to VMFA agency staff only. These are non-exempt positions without benefits, scheduled to work about 28 hours per week on average and up to 1,450 hours annually (May 1 – April 30). The Best Café is a fast-casual restaurant that features an outside dining are that overlooks the beautiful sculpture garden and the popular Chihuly reeds. With events such as Dominion Energy Jazz Café and the ever-popular Happy Hour on Friday evenings, the Best Café is a popular spot among visitors. The fresh menu is always changing and boasts a diverse level of cuisine that caters to all tastes. Barista duties include:

Greeting guests. Making and serving a variety of beverages such espresso, coffee, and tea; also serving beer and wine to guests. Cleaning, wiping down surfaces, mopping and sweeping. Maintaining cleanliness in serving area. Stocking and managing inventory throughout shift. Knowledgeable about menu, including all ingredients. Managing daily inventory of both back of house and front of house supplies. Knowledgeable about the VMFA with the ability to provide information to guests.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of coffees, teas, beer and wine. Ability to prepare various coffee drinks at the customer’s request. Ability to clean and maintain espresso and coffee machine.

Ability to provide excellent customer service. Ability to remain calm in high volume situations. Ability to work a flexible schedule including days, holidays, evenings and weekends. Ability to complete transactions accurately. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with both guests and staff members. Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions. Ability to expedite food items from the serving line. Ability to operate point-of-sales system including both cash and credit card transactions. Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; and taste and smell. Ability to stand for up to 10 hours. Ability to bend, stoop and reach. Ability to be prompt and punctual to shifts. Maintain a professional appearance. Preferred Qualifications: Previous food service experience in a fast- paced environment. ServSafe Certification. Knowledge of Alcohol Beverage Control policies and guidelines. Experience with point of sales system and responsible cash handling.
