Chair of Musical Theatre and Open Rank Teacher of Acting

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) seeks an experienced and accomplished, full-time, tenured or tenure-track teacher of acting, and stage director to chair its renowned musical theatre BFA program.  


Faculty duties may include teaching undergraduate courses for the BFA in the musical theatre degree in acting, audition techniques, musical theatre history and styles, as well as directing musicals for the mainstage and studio seasons, and directing student showcases. All faculty are expected to provide service to the college and university by membership on committees for promotion and tenure, academic course development, and faculty searches to name a few.


Department Chair duties will include leading the department in:

  • Management and supervision of musical theatre department
  • Creation of class schedules and course development
  • Artistic season planning and coordination of showcases
  • Long-range strategic planning for department
  • Preparation and management of departmental budget
  • Student recruitment and retention
  • Facilitating guest artists and master classes
  • Other customary administrative duties


Recruiting and annual student showcases may necessitate travel within the US.


Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must hold a terminal degree in theatre or musical theatre (performance or directing) or equivalent professional experience, with significant experience in musical theatre. Candidates must have a minimum of five years teaching and directing experience at the university and/or professional level.


Preferred Qualifications: The Candidate should be a proven artist/teacher with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and willing to become part of a highly collaborative and experienced faculty.  


Salary:  Commensurate with rank, qualifications and experience.

Department:  The musical theatre program at CCM is the oldest in the country and was the first of its kind. The program offers undergraduate training to students who earn the BFA in Musical Theatre, and has a season of four musicals. Its graduates are following careers as performers and creative artists in every facet of the entertainment industry.

Division:  The Department of Musical Theatre is part of the Division of Theatre Arts, Production, and Arts Administration (TAPAA), which has 68 members on its faculty and staff, with numerous undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The TAPAA Division produces a main stage season of two operas, two musicals and two plays in two venues: a 663 seat traditional proscenium house and a 373 seat modified thrust. In addition, the division also produces a number of studio productions in all the performance disciplines in a highly flexible and fully equipped studio theatre.
