The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s libraries and museums. This position reports to the Communications Manager. The mission of OC is to develop communication strategies in support of IMLS priorities while proactively engaging external audiences and identifying opportunities to showcase the agency’s grantmaking activities and accomplishments. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Employ strong writing skills in writing agency press releases and media alerts, talking points, speeches and testimony, and editing agency publications. Serve as the agency’s primary media contact, managing relations with the press, writing press releases, and strategizing how to maximize the reach of IMLS work and grantee stories to the American public. As needed, prepare talking points, memos, op-eds, media preparation, quotes, and speeches for IMLS staff. Engage in media monitoring and report regularly with OC on key trends, articles, and topics. Serve as the primary contact manager for the office’s contracts with the Government Publishing Office (GPO), graphic designers, and outside public relations counsel.Submit and manage the office’s communications-related purchase requests. Serve as the primary contact for the agency’s printing orders and manage IMLS’s relationship with the Government Publishing Office (GPO). Manage editing, timelines, processes, and purchase requests related to agency publications and print products using project management/strong organizational skills. Manage the agency’s Publications Room and communications materials inventory for conferences and other events, ordering replacement materials and collateral as needed. Develop and maintain communications relationships with other government agencies and key stakeholders in the museum and library fields. Establish strong relationships across departments, engaging in and supporting strategic internal communications practices within the agency. Compile and send out weekly internal newsletter on library and museum topics to inform all staff. Advise on media and communications strategy, talking points, and messaging to IMLS staff and grantees. Maintain an organized archived and internal resources system on messaging and other communications materials for internal staff use. Provide communications and event support to IMLS events, conferences, and other public activities. Other duties as assigned.
