Coordinator of Docents & Interns

Department: Education/InterpretationReports To: Shannon Landing Amos Head of Museum InterpretationFLSA: ExemptEmployment Status: Regular/Full-time POSITION SUMMARY: To recruit, train, schedule, and oversee the day to day operations of the High’s docent program and coordinator the High’s internship program. WORK SCHEDULE: • Monday – Frida, 9am-5pm, and some Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: • Recruit and schedule docent volunteer educators to provide tours for school, adult, and family audiences working closely with the school and teacher services and guest relations departments. • Develop, maintain, and distribute a monthly schedule. • Work closely with the Heads of Museum Interpretation and School and Teacher Services to develop and coordinate the annual docent training schedule. Training occurs biweekly on Monday mornings and Tuesday evenings. • Provide logistical support for the docent training program to include scheduling and contracting with speakers, scheduling rooms/gallery space, and coordinating with other museum departments (security, special events, guest relations). • Coordinate the High’s Summer Internship Program to include recruiting, scheduling, and associated HR paperwork. • Maintain regular communication with all docents and interns. Support their efforts including maintenance of rosters, keeping up to date contact information, and tracking of years of service. • Conduct and train new docent classes as needed. Classes occur on Wednesdays either during the daytime or evening depending upon the focus of the class. • Be prepared to give guided tours to all museum audiences as needed. • Develop and use program budget to achieve efficient use of resources. • Work closely with the office of membership to ensure all docents maintain annual museum memberships. • Attend and assist with department of education special events and programs as needed. Education and Experience: • BA/BS in art history, museum studies, museum education, art education, or other humanities field and 3-5 years of experience working with volunteers in a cultural setting. • Experience giving public talks or tours. Skills and Abilities: • Proven experience organizing large group of volunteers • Familiarly with the museum environment • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills • Attention to detail and accuracy • Ability to work independently and with a variety of people • Professional demeanor essential; patience in dealing with a wide range of personalities • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Language Skills: • Excellent writing and public speaking skills Mathematical Skills: • Ability to assemble and to evaluate budgets and statistics. Reasoning Ability: • Ability to assess and evaluate information; • Ability to organize and express information in clear logical sequences.
