Role Summary

The Director of Communications for the New York Knicks will be responsible for day-to-day media activity for the team, its coaches and players. Works in conjunction with VP, Public Relations on all team communications. Oversees and implements communications with beat media, including press release writing and dissemination, media availabilities at practice and on-game days. Periodically travels with the team as the public relations representative, interacts with coaching staff, players and traveling print and broadcast media to ensure full compliance with media policies and requests. Directly responsible for production of team publications, including media guide, game program, training camp guide, post-season guide and game notes. Coordinates flow of information to team Web Site. Manages office staff daily and oversees the game night staff.

Specific Functions/Activities Summary

  • Lead publicity efforts for players, partners and events both on and off the court. This includes partnering with players to build professional brands
  • Create innovative content on Knicks social media platforms to gain positive publicity for organization. In partnership with digital team, oversee team web site content to ensure alignment with brand messaging
  • Establish relationships with celebrities, lifestyle media, influencers and editors to help drive team message
  • Lead communications efforts and facilitate player involvement for Garden of Dreams and community events
  • Build relationships with player agents and representatives communicates team information to beat, local and national media outlets on a daily basis, as well as various media interview requests
  • Periodically travel with team as primary public relations representatives
  • Facilitates execution of press conferences and major announcements, and produces all team news releases and media advisories, and media requests for players and coaching staff at practices, game days, on the road
  • Leads production of all team publications, including media guide, game magazine, yearbook, CD –ROM, training camp guide and post season guide
  • Oversee outreach for celebrity pickup in lifestyle magazines and on social media platforms
  • Lead all team photography and facilitate photo opportunities at press conferences and major events
  • Educate players and front office on social media and the ever-changing media landscape, prepare players, coaches and management for media at practices and games
  • Serve as liaison between players, media and management for special events and community appearances
  • Supervise Student Associate and Game Night Staff
  • Travel required to (but not limited to) the following – team home and occasional road games


  • 7 – 10 years working in public relations and communication efforts for a public relations agency, professional sports team and/or high-profile brands, including traditional and social media experience and crisis management
  • Experienced writer who can develop and execute PR and publicity plans
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field
  • Experience in a fast-paced environment, servicing diverse groups, shifting priorities, multi-faceted projects
  • Proven experience on balancing short-term objectives and long-term vision and can work simultaneously to deliver both
  • Experience within the professional sports industry regarding rules, requirements and policies preferred
  • Passion for professional sports and athletics, understanding of the “in season” schedule of team and time commitment of the professional sports world


Candidates who have completed 60 credits of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
