The Corporation of the Fine Arts Museums is seeking a Director of Individual and Major Giving.
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, which is comprised of the de Young and Legion of Honor Museums, is experiencing an exciting renaissance with several innovative and groundbreaking projects underway, including the launch of a Contemporary Arts program in 2017, the building of an interactive Children’s Gallery in late 2018, and the new initiative Free Saturdays, providing free general admission to all Bay Area residents As the largest public arts institution in San Francisco, the Museums welcome more than 1.5 million visitors annually, present an ambitious schedule of more than 20 exhibitions per year, house a world-class collection of 151,000 important artworks, and have a member base of 100,000 households and more than 1,000 individual donors.
Fundraising efforts have also excelled in the past few years to support these exciting new initiatives, and this is supported by the launch of a new portfolio system for frontline solicitors and a robust pool of prospects. The Director of Individual and Major Giving will play a major role in this growth by expanding giving from individuals. Reporting to the Senior Director of Individual and Major Giving, the Director of Individual and Major Giving will oversee the major giving strategy, supervise a team of 2, and manage a portfolio of 100-150 individuals who have the capacity to give $25,000 or more annually.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop strategy to achieve maximum growth in gifts from individuals giving $2,500 to $100,000.
- Serve as lead solicitor for unrestricted and restricted gifts from individuals at the $25,000 level and higher, focusing on $25,000 and $50,000 levels and face-to-face asks.
- Manage a dynamic portfolio of individual donors and prospects with the capacity to make philanthropic gifts of $25,000 or more annually. Responsible for identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals in the portfolio.
- Responsible for personally leading and growing the $2 million Leadership Circle Program ($25,000+); Oversee staff who manage the $2.5 million Patron Circle ($2,500-$24,000).
- Partner with the Senior Director of Individual and Major Giving to secure $5 million annually from individuals for restricted purposes (primarily exhibition and education programs).
- Work closely with the Donor Relations team to execute renewals for Leadership Circle; as well as acknowledgements, stewardship, and benefit fulfilment for Leadership Circle and restricted support.
- Work closely with the Donor Relations and Special Events teams to plan cultivation and stewardship events that support fundraising efforts for Leadership Circle and restricted gifts.
- Supervise and mentor the Individual Giving Officer and the Development Associate for Individual & Major Giving.
- Support the Director, Director of Development, and the Senior Director of Individual and Major Giving in soliciting restricted major gifts from individuals.
- Serve as lead liaison to the Curatorial Department, creating template solicitation letters for exhibition prospects.
- Oversee the Development Associate in prospect identification and research, and proposal creation.
- Works collaboratively with the Museum’s executive leadership, trustees, curatorial and conservation staff, and development and events teams, involving them, as appropriate, in the cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors.
- Regularly attend social events, both internally and externally, to act as an ambassador for FAMSF, and identify and cultivate new prospects.
- Work with the Data Information Services Team to produce regular reports and updates on progress and ROI of portfolio.
- Develop and maintain donor and prospect lists, and manage related records in the CRM database. Work with the Development Associate and Data Information Systems Team to ensure that individual donor records are properly maintained and updated.
Education and Training: A B.A degree from an accredited college or university. A major in art history or other arts-related field is desirable.
Work Experience: Minimum of five-seven years experience in fundraising.
Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of fundraising principles, techniques, and ethics. Experience in Bay Area fundraising desirable.
- Experience developing strategies for cultivation and solicitation of individual donors.
- Proficiency in Word, Excel and Salesforce CRM.
- Highly motivated and well-organized with a progressive record of achievement.
- Excellent research, writing, and organizational skills; strong follow through; high-level analytical, problem-solving, and presentation skills.
- Ability to understand and effectively articulate the mission and future plans of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; to motivate and interact effectively with Board, volunteers, donors, and museum staff at all levels.
- High level of tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Ability to work nights and weekends as needed for events or deadlines.
- Knowledge of art a plus.
