Provost Office Director of Research

ArtCenter’s Strategic Plan, Create Change 2.0 includes a renewed commitment to research in art and design at the undergraduate and graduate levels and an expressed vision of creating a groundbreaking, design-centered research community. The Director of Research is a new leadership position that will work with the Associate Provost of Faculty Affairs, faculty, and students to develop and advance ArtCenter’s Research endeavors. This position offers an opportunity to envision and build a design and practice-led research community. The incumbent will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the present and future creative and intellectual life of an internationally recognized design institution. This position will work to ensure that Art Center’s faculty and students are supported in their diverse art and design contexts from the academia to the design studio. This includes the development and administration of resources that support and advance Art Center’s commitment to engaging in rigorous and ethical research, including the creation and integration of an Institutional Review Board (IRB), advancement of undergraduate and graduate research curricula, and the support and cultivation of research across the College. Successful candidates will bring relevant individual scholarship as well as administrative, leadership, and teaching experience to support the College’s curricular goals and to impact its standing among peer institutions, prospective funders, community partners, and within the global landscape of art and design research. A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university 5 – 7 years of research experience, particularly as pertains to art and design-related areas Prior college-level teaching experience A record of scholarly research and relevant professional activities Prior experience working with human subjects-related issues and with IRB Outstanding managerial and administrative skills and a demonstrated record in effective, sustained management of complex initiatives Collaborative expertise with excellent interpersonal, problem solving, written and verbal communication skills to work effectively within the institution Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with tact and discretion Demonstrated experience in and a commitment to diversity, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within Art Center’s diverse communities

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Ellucian/Colleague student information system or other higher education relate software and systems Experience in Art and Design programs

Essential Functions Research Management – 60%

Develop and providing administrative leadership for ethical research practices, including the integration of an Institutional Review Board (IRB); Serve as chair and main point of contact, ensuring appropriate reviews, dissemination of findings to applicants, and record keeping Providing advisement and support for Art Center’s educational research agenda and curriculum (undergraduate and graduate) Model and lead graduate-level research for an art and design college Lead institutional efforts to elevate and incorporate research into the curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels Develop and facilitate research opportunities for faculty and students with regional, national, and international community partners Identify opportunities for expanding support for faculty research Develop and oversee the College’s human subjects research policies and procedures, ensuring institutional compliance with informed consent and IRB ethical and legal requirements Lead institutional efforts to oversee and integrate ethical human subjects research into the pedagogy and curriculum of relevant courses/programs

Programming Support and Education – 30% In conjunction with faculty, Chairs, Educational Partnerships, Development, and other relevant offices, cultivate grant and contract opportunities Support faculty and student research efforts across Art Center’s diverse art and design contexts from academia to the design studio Provide guidance and support for faculty research initiatives, including the Faculty Project Grants (FPG) Developing programing and activities that support, advance, and convene a culture of research across the College

Non-Essential duties 10% Maintain memberships and active involvement in applicable professional organizations Serve on college-wide committees Other duties as assigned
