NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities. The Division of Research Programs supports scholarly research that advances knowledge and understanding in the humanities. The Division makes grants in the humanities that support: individual fellowships to conduct original research; collaborative research projects; the preparation of scholarly editions and translations; research conferences; research projects involving digital expression; research fellowships administered by independent research institutions; scholarship in the humanities for general audiences.


Ensures that all grant applications are thoroughly and fairly evaluated in accordance with agency procedures. Ensures that the Division’s staff follows agency procedures for selecting review panels, conducting panel discussions, and preparing summary review materials with funding recommendations. Works closely with the Office of the Chairman of NEH to implement agency policy and ensure that Division staff follow such policies. Stays abreast of developments in the humanities that may affect the operations of the Division. Conveys information about the Division’s grant programs to the public. Supervises the preparation of program guidelines and other publications. Supervises the work performed by a group of professional staff by assigning duties and responsibilities; recommending recruitment, promotion, and reassignment; providing instructions, supervision, and coordination of assignments as necessary, and appraising performance.
