TITLE:  Foundation Gift Officer DEPARTMENT:  Philanthropy & Advancement REPORTS TO:  Director of Institutional Giving STATUS:  Full Time, Exempt POSITION SUMMARY: The Foundation Gift Officer is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of foundations to establish new partnerships and strengthen existing relationships that will result in philanthropic support for The Cleveland Orchestra.  This role provides the expertise to advance the orchestra’s interests by researching and identifying sources of support, proactively seeking opportunities to generate new proposals based on foundation guidelines and interests and maintaining strong relationship ties with program officers and foundation boards. The Foundation Gift Officer manages a portfolio of foundation contributors including a schedule of grant and report deadlines.  This role also serves as the staff lead to the Foundation Taskforce, a subgroup of the Fundraising Committee, involving trustees in prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. MAJOR DUTIES:


Provide leadership and oversight of approximately $4 million in annual revenue from foundations and government grants as well as $2-10 million in special campaign gifts, including appropriations and capital grants. Execute the foundation fundraising strategy including all solicitations, grant applications, benefit delivery, hosting and recognition; provide strategic direction for the overall program and involve appropriate assistance from the President and CEO, Chief Development Officer, Director of Institutional Giving, Board of Trustees and other colleagues in the solicitation process as necessary In coordination with the Director of Institutional Giving and Corporate and Government Gift Officer, execute grant strategy for securing biennial state capital funds Maintain updated information on prospects and donors in the organization’s donor database, Tessitura Build and maintain a prospect file of local, national and international foundation prospects Serve as staff lead to the board members to identify, track and leverage trustee relationships to foundation prospects and boards. Coordinate opportunities for stewarding and hosting constituency groups with the internal events team Lead foundation strategy for fundraising for special campaign and project initiatives


Manage grants calendar to ensure all proposals, reports and projects are completed in advance of the deadline Develop compelling proposals to secure targeted grants; coordinate with internal partners (i.e. Finance, Marketing, Development Communications) to obtain information, institutional highlights, financial/budget data, etc. Work closely with Development Communications staff to develop newsletters and other regular communications to grantors

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct reports or supervisory responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS:  

Bachelor’s Degree required with a minimum of five years of experience in non-profit fundraising. Experience in the management of institutional portfolio (government & public/private foundations) highly desirable. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, primarily Word and Excel; knowledge of Tessitura Database a plus.  Superior interpersonal skills to successfully interact with a diverse population of constituents. Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written.  Ability to successfully compose, submit and secure grant funding. Outstanding organizational skills with a high attention to detail. Demonstrated independent, mature judgment. Ability to consistently maintain a professional image and demeanor. Strong problem-solving skills combined with a collaborative approach. Ability to work independently and as a collaborative team member. Ability to successfully prioritize to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Must be able to travel between locations (Severance Hall and Blossom Music Center) and to local and/or regional meetings and events. Must be able to work evening and weekend hours as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   The physical requirements of this position are related to a standard office environment.  Must be able to utilize a phone, computer and screen, and other office equipment.  While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to hear, talk and primarily sit; occasionally stand, walk, reach, stoop, or kneel. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
