NYSCI is seeking a Manager of Government Grants & Sponsored Research (“Grants Manager”) to lead our fundraising efforts with government funding agencies to advance NYSCI’s portfolio of research and development projects. The Grants Manager is a critical member of the Institutional Advancement team which includes 9 full-time staff that raise a total of more than $12 million annually for R&D initiatives, exhibits, educational programs and museum operations. The Manager will report to the Director of Institutional Advancement and work closely with senior leaders from NYSCI’s Research, Exhibits and Programs division, including the Chief Learning Officer, Chief Scientist, and other program directors. The Grants Manager will be a key member of the NYSCI development team, and will focus primarily on government fundraising (city, state and federal), with most of their time dedicated to providing support to federal grants from STEM and education focused agencies such as the National Science Foundation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S. Department of Education, Institute for Museum and Library Services and others. Working in collaboration with the Chief Learning Officer, the Manager will help guide the organizational strategy for government grants and be responsible for overseeing cross-departmental collaboration to streamline the procurement of government grants.
 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, manage, and execute NYSCI’s government grant programs in collaboration with colleagues from Institutional Advancement and across the Research, Exhibits and Programs division.
  • Research prospects and contribute to the development of high quality proposals and reports, including developing project ideas and budgets in consultation with program staff.
  • Manage cultivation and stewardship of relationships with government program officers and funders.
  • Oversee and coordinate grant-writing process, including collaborating with program staff to conceptualize concepts, write and/or edit grant components.
  • Assemble, proofread, and edit all required sections of proposals and upload onto online platforms, such as NSF Fastlane, Research.gov, Grants.gov, NASA NSPIRES, and NIH Commons.
  • Manage grant portfolio by tracking grants, developing reporting systems, researching and writing reports, maintaining records and working with staff to ensure each project or program is meeting proposal conditions and expectations.
  • Develop and track budgets in collaboration with finance department and program staff.
  • Monitor government RFPs, evaluate them for relevance to NYSCI’s mission and programs, and write RFP summaries for distribution to senior program leaders, as appropriate.
  • Establish and maintain routines for internal information-sharing about relevant federal agencies and key competitors, and internal progress on proposal development.
  • Provide assistance to partner organizations when NYSCI serves as subawardee or submits a collaborative proposal.
  • Thoroughly understand NYSCI’s mission and policies, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs and finances.

 
Qualifications:

  • Education: BA required, MA preferred
  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience with grant writing, reporting, and prospect research; proven track record of successful grants/li>
  • Experience writing and/or editing high quality and complex research and program proposals
  • Experience working in a highly collaborative environment and ability to be a strategic partner with research and content experts and the Institutional Advancement department
  • Familiarity with government grants protocols, proposal and budget guidelines, and compliance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with funders
  • Ability to take initiative, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, problem solve, and work as part of a team
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Docs/Sheets, and Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge database
  • Interest, knowledge of, or background in science and/or science education
