Job Description:

The Florida Museum of Natural History is seeking a full-time, OPS Butterfly Rainforest Production Assistant.

Specific duties include:

  • Working in butterfly conservatory, greenhouse, native garden and plant sale
  • Moving soil, equipment, and materials, occasionally installing plants, pruning small plant material, propagating plant material, cleaning in water feature, trimming trees, assisting with larger projects, treating for pest problems and maintaining native butterfly garden as directed
  • Maintaining plants and landscape areas in the Vivarium and exterior gardens
  • Watering and maintaining greenhouse plants prior to installation in Vivarium and plant sale
  • Cleaning and maintaining Vivarium facilities which includes but is not limited to sweeping, washing exhibit windows, wiping down benches and exhibit panels
  • Maintaining the landscaping and components within the water feature
  • Staffing exhibit while open to the public, answering questions on both butterflies and plants, giving tours as time permits, monitoring for and preventing inappropriate conduct in the exhibit for safety and USDA containment, and advising public on exhibit maintenance and desirable plants for home butterfly gardening
  • Participating in butterfly releases, assisting with the preparation of butterfly pupae shipments and record-keeping, assisting with rearing case and laboratory cleaning and organization, working at the plant sale and large signature events at the museum

This position is for 40 hours per week and requires availability on weekends .

Advertised Salary:

$10.00 hourly.

Minimum Requirements:

Associate’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 2 years of college education.
  • This position requires availability on weekends.
  • Candidates must be able to perform heavy physical labor, lifting and long hours in the heat and cold.
