The Retail Sales Director will be responsible for driving the sales growth for the direct sales team of the Sotheby’s Wine retail business.  With equal focus on recruiting new clients and nurturing existing Sotheby’s relationships, the primary goal will be to meet and exceed personal and team sales goals, and therefore contribute to the achievement of the annual business plan.

This professional will have a proven track record demonstrating significant sales of wine to private clients in addition to the ability to build a strong network of clients.  The Retail Sales Director will identify proactive business getting opportunities and developing a portfolio of events and relationships of actively engaged clients that drive the growth of Sotheby’s Wine’s retail business. 


  • Drive sales growth by selling wine to high net worth clients via telephone, email, in-person and in-store
  • Meet and exceed sales goals for direct sales team
  • Cultivate strong relationships with new and existing clients and identify proactive ways to continue these relationships and translate these into longer term transactional opportunities
  • Develop new business opportunities and strategies around how to identify and target new clients
  • Responsible for regular analysis of buyers in both auction and retail to target buying habits
  • Ensure clients are appropriately managed and rewarded
  • Manage fine wine sales team member to ensure their achievement of sales goals and development of client relationships
  • Regularly contribute to retail marketing campaigns by writing and creating content emails, retail price lists, tasting notes for the website, social media and other campaigns
  • Participate in events for Sotheby’s Wine business including idea creation and managing guest lists
  • Host tastings, talks and lectures at Sotheby’s Wine and in third party locations
  • Provide inventory recommendations to buying team
  • Work with auction and advisory team to create more crossover opportunities between auction, advisory and retail
  • Understand our wine portfolio and demonstrate a strong knowledge of wine
  • Support retail team by working on the sales floor of the retail store


  • Proven track record of selling fine wine to high net worth clients
  • WSET Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in developing clientele over time and nurturing relationships
  • Superior client service skills, from personal presentation, listening skills, and written/verbal communication
  • Minimum of 3 years sales experience managing private clients
  • Exceptional knowledge of wines and vintages relevant to the fine wine market
  • Strong ability to network and convert social connections into business opportunities
  • Strong organizational skills, must be able to multi task and deliver to multiple deadlines across a variety of ongoing projects capable of working on both an independent and team basis
  • Flexible work schedule inclusive of attending events at night and some weekend store coverage
