Blue Man Productions seeks a full-time Technical Director for Blue Man Productions. The Technical Director will be the technical lead across all production functions of Blue Man Productions. The Technical Director should have extensive knowledge of all facets of theatre technology, including but not limited to rigging, carpentry, audio, video, lighting, technical design and fabrication. The Technical Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations and the safe and efficient use of the BMP production facility, undertaking project management, drafting, budget tracking, and creating departmental archives. The Technical Director mus exercise independent judgement in performing a wide variety of duties.

Detail-oriented and extremely organized. Ability to successfully multi-task, and take ownership to drive assigned projects. Creative, tactical problem-solver and a dedicated self-starter where no task is too big or too small. Computer Literacy (MS Office) required, drafting skills are also required.

About the Job: The Technical Director has a seasoned, in-depth knowledge of operating safety procedures, local and federal code safety requirements, and be completely versed in industry safety standards and compliance requirements. On an ongoing basis, the TD will monitor the condition of all equipment in the BMP production facility; arranging for service, repair, and replacement as needed. The Technical Director is responsible for s responsible for annual maintenance and certification of rigging and lift equipment. The TD will manage environmental, health and safety requirements for BMP’s production facility and liaise with the Resident and Touring Productions on these topics. The TD will also serve as a resource for the Resident and Touring Shows divisions in setting protocols and maintaining accurate documentation of all Blue Man Group props, special effects, instruments, and scenic elements.

The Technical Director will also serve as the Supervising Technical Director for all Special Events and PR Appearances, generating ground plans, production riders, and liaising with external partners in regard to technical and staffing needs. The Technical Director may also be assigned to travel to events and appearances to serve as the onsite Technical Director.

The Technical Director will collaborate with the Research & Development Design Lab on the development of new technology, including video displays, electronic musical instruments, and computer control. Partner with the Lab in converting prototypes into reproducible elements for Shows and Tours. The Technical Director works closely with the Creative Department and Recording Studio to coordinate their use of the production facility. Additionally, the Technical Director will serve as a technical resource for the Creative Department during their new material development process.

This role will be a key player and as such will be required to build and maintain relationships both within and outside the organization and will be imparted to contribute to an enthusiastic and positive work environment and will work towards energizing the team and building moral and confidence within the department and the company as a whole.

 Responsibilities Include: • Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of the Production Facility, including supervising the use of rigging, lighting, sound, and audio equipment. • Arrange for annual service and inspection of all equipment as per industry standard practice. • Oversee the workshop areas, ensuring that safety equipment is in place at all times and in good working order. • Develop, implement, and maintain emergency procedures for any potential personnel incidents or accidents occurring in the production facility. • Ensure production facility is appropriately stocked with production consumables. • Compile project files to ensure all materials are organized, accurate, and complete. • Recruit, train, and develop crew resources. • Maintain current vendor relationships and proactively seek new ones in line with the needs of the Company. • Monitor and implement industry best practices in construction and installation, particularly in relation to Health & Safety. • Manage the annual production facility budget, delivering estimates, financial projections, and staff planning in a timely manner, based on the season calendar and long-term planning. • Develop and maintain database of vendors, staff, partner, and freelance contacts. • Serve as the Supervising Technical Director for all Special Event and Marketing based appearances and shoots. • Generate ground plans, production riders, and coordinate staffing needs. • Act as the on-site Technical Director for all above activity as assigned. • Effectively communicating the needs of the organization both internally and externally. • Prepare and receive equipment, ensuring that all gear is cleaned and in working order before and after use. • Arrange for trucking, develop truck packs, and be a part of the loading and unloading of trucks. • Participate in all aspects of the Production Department and assist with additional Production Department duties as assigned.

The Technical Director must be able to complete the following tasks: • Required to sit and stand for long periods of time. • Lift up to 50lbs of assorted props, gear, and equipment. • Ability to ascend/descend a ladder, climb stairs, bend, stretch, reach, and twist. • Ability to safely drive and operate scissor and fork lifts. • Occasional nights and weekends required. • Occasional travel required. • OSHA 30 certification.

Qualifications: • Demonstrable experience of theater production with extensive knowledge of all facets of theatre technology. • Strong proficiency in VectorWorks and AutoCAD. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel. • Self-motivated and excellent time management skills. • Strong commitment to current best Health and Safety practices. • Detail oriented with sound judgement. • Ability to both lead and be a part of a team. • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, along with an ability to work on several projects concurrently. • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience working on Broadway, Regional Theatre, Opera, Concert Touring, and Event Planning.
